STEP 1. SAFETY PRECAUTION: (you knew this was coming) dont get lazy and simply turn the switch to the ceiling fan off turn off the circuit breaker that powers the switch to ensure nobody accidentally turns the switch on while youre holding the bare wires.

Heres a list of the handyman tools youre going to need to complete this project.

  • Step ladder,
  • screwdrivers, both phillips and regular,
  • a voltage detector,
  • needle-nose pliers
  • Optional: cordless screwdriver.
  • And a flashlight.

Vaulted Ceiling Safety: Removing a ceiling fan thats mounting on a vaulted ceiling? Make sure you use a ladder thats tall enough to use safely and have someone hold it steady while you work. I like the telescoping multi-position ladders.

If youre removing an old ceiling fan and dont plan on re-using it rather than throwing it away you can drop it off at your nearest Habitat For Humanity Store.

STEP 2. How To Remove A Ceiling Fan Light Fixture This unit has 3 screws that hold it on. Simply remove these 3 screws to separate the fixture from the housing.

Be sure to remove the light bulbs so you can reuse them. Each unit or manufacturer may be slightly different but the process is usually the same.

Once the 3 screws have been removed you will expose the wires.

This one had two wires secured with wire nuts one hot (blue wire) and the return (white wire). Unscrew the wire nuts and you can separate the light fixture from the unit.

Many newer units have a pre-wired plug that you simply un-plug to remove the fixture.

STEP 3. How To Remove Ceiling Fan Blades: I like to use my cordless screwdriver on jobs like this cause it really speeds things up.

Typically there are 2 screws per blade so if youve got a 5 blade unit thats 10 screws that must be removed just to get the blades off.

Remove two screws from each ceiling fan blade and set the blades aside.

Remember to put the screws in a zip lock bag if you plan to reuse or give the fan away.

Thats it for this step, now move on to step 4.

STEP 4. Remove The Ceiling Fan Motor Cover by UN-screwing 2 screws on either side of the cover (4 screws in all).

Than remove the cover from the motor and set aside. Now that the motor-cover is off youve exposed the ceiling fan motor mount.

This model has 3 screws holding the ceiling fan to the ceiling mount so youll have to remove all 3 screws and let the motor hang.

(All modern ceiling fans are manufactured with a built-in Hanger to allow the fan to hang while you to wire it.)

Electrical SAFETY: check the wires one last time before removing the wire nuts. I use an audible tester that lets me know if there is power to the wires.

Ceiling-fan-removal project is almost complete. The last thing to do is remove the flush mount ceiling fan mounting plate from the ceiling.

Test wires before removing

If youre looking to re-install this ceiling fan follow this DIY ADVICE: This ceiling fan mount was screwed directly into a ceiling joist so there was no need to mount a ceiling fan bracket.

If youre installing the fan where one did not exist before please ensure that you have a secure mounting position.

If no ceiling joist is close to where you want to mount your ceiling fan you may need to install a ceiling fan bracket.
