Installing a Vaulted Ceiling

The construction of vaulted ceilings are inherently a lot more susceptible to moisture damage as opposed to the open attic methods due to the creation of isolated air spaces within the rafter cavities. A vaulted ceiling can intoxicate the home inhabitants and others with the feel and look of the dramatics, which are created by the vaulted ceiling, design possibilities.

When planning a project such as installing a vaulted ceiling into a home, there are some very critical structural components to consider. A roof structure is very important and cannot be compromised by cutting out horizontal ceiling joists in order to create a vaulted ceiling as the roof can collapse or sag after time. If you do not have sufficient knowledge of roof structuring, it is strongly advised to get in contact with a structural engineer before proceeding with the built of a vaulted ceiling.

When an architect or builder builds a new home, they will use the scissors truss method when installing vaulted ceilings. In this method, the slope of the exterior roof is used to construct the truss desired. Under the truss, the builder will then build a vaulted ceiling, which would normally be half of the exterior roofs slope. When building a vaulted ceiling into an existing home the same method should be used. It is quite a costly method as well as labor intensive and sufficient knowledge is needed, and the desired slope may be to gentle to the homeowners liking.

Adding additional lumber to bottom sides of present roof rafters in order to deepen them and keeping in mind to accommodate necessary insulation, will be a good idea for the installation of vaulted ceilings with a high enough slope. It is critical to have a two-inch space between bottom of roof sheathing and the insulations top. Insulation must not be packed between roof sheathing and roof rafters when installing a vaulted ceiling. It is imperative for air to flow over insulation when traveling from the soffit vents over to the vent in the roof ridge.

Consider the vaulted ceiling lighting while busy with the project as it is the ideal time to plan the lighting methods, in case the choice falls on skylights. Flared light tunnels are ideal to install as they provide an abundance of natural light which will stream into the remodeled vaulted ceiling, where as sky lights although great allows lesser light. Keep in mind also that skylights or flared light tunnels must be installed prior to insulation when fitting a vaulted ceiling into a home. While installing the vaulted ceiling another great idea is the installation of recessed sound system speakers. All the accompanying wires connected to hidden speakers can be concealed along with the speakers within the vaulted ceiling making later installation ideas and problems unnecessary.

While having the home in a temporary state of disarray when installing a vaulted ceiling, it is the ideal opportunity to access difficult to reach areas in the attic as well as hidden areas never accessed. The installation of a couple of blank conduits, which will extend to the electrical panel of the home, is a brilliant idea as homes need to be wired for future technology to attract possible buyers. The installation of low voltage wires in vaulted ceilings is recommended and very feasible.
